This page will attempt to answer frequently asked questions regarding Shadow Tower.

Q: How is this game different from King's Field?

A: If King's Field can be described as a dungeon crawler—a game where you slowly explore locations to find a way to proceed further, then Shadow Tower can be called a "dungeon clearer"—an overall linear game which encourages combat via finite enemies in claustrophobic corridors. It also spices things up a little with easily breakable equipment which needs to be repaired at the cost of health, but at the same time makes healing more restrictive.

Of course that doesn't mean there are no secrets or exploration, but level design wise it is closer to King's Field 3 (2 in US) than any other game in the series.

  • There is also voiced dialogue and no fall damage.

Q: I just discovered voiced dialogue is dubbed. Is there an undub patch?

A: Yes.
You can download the patch in xdelta format from archive.org and apply it with an utility like xdelta UI.

Q: How do I save the game?

A: Press interaction button near a tomstone with a crown and round blue jewel.

Other tombstones will either be warp points (with diamond-shaped jewel) or shops.

Q: What should I buy in a cune shop?

A: Soul Pods can give a good boost early on and Fortune Great Helm is good, even if initially expensive. Feel free to pick whatever you like though.

Q: How do I use magic?

A: First you need to equip a ring and one of the available spells, each ring can only cast specific ones. After that press Circle button followed by Triangle (for right hand) or Square (for left hand). Instructions assume default button layout.

Q: An item does not appear despite guides saying so?

A: Each item can only be collected once, so that means that you either already have this item or it was not a guaranteed drop.

Q: Is there a healing fountain anywhere?

A: Yes! It's in the first area of Water World, but before you can use it you need to return Pitcher of Nadya to Akryal.

Q: How do I enter big door at the bottom?

A: You need to kill every boss before the door will let you proceed. Orbs on it indicate which bosses have already been slain.

Q: Is there an New Game+?

A: No.
Loading the save after beating final boss will only send you back to the top of the tower.

Q: One enemy in Screeching Area refuses to spawn. What do I do?

A: The enemy that does not spawn is a third King Hopper. It has a miniscule 5% chance to appear and only when another King Hopper is killed, if that does not happen it will be unkillable forever.
Except there is a workaround! To make it appear you need to save in that location, go to its spawn location, use Sacred Feather. Repeat until it appears.

Q: Any other advice?

A: Try to have a fully repaired bow at all times.
